Interior designers make the interior of a space functional, beautiful and safe for both residential and commercial buildings. They select, specify colors, furniture and other materials to create useful and stylish looks for building interiors.

What Interior Designers Do

  • Determine the client's goals and requirements of the project
  • Consider how the space will be used and how people will move through the space
  • Specify materials and furnishings, such as lighting, furniture, wall coverings, flooring, equipment, and artwork
  • Create a timeline for the interior design project and estimate project costs
  • Visit after the project to ensure that client satisfaction

Work Environment

Many interior designers worked for the specialized design services industry or for architectural, engineering, and related services industries. In 2010, about 30 percent were self-employed.
