Architects plan and design buildings and other structures using CADD during the design process. They discuss with clients the objectives, requirements, and budget of a project. In some cases, architects provide various predesign services, such as feasibility and environmental impact studies, site selection, cost analyses and land-use studies, and design requirements.

What Architects Do

  • Consult with clients to determine requirements for structures
  • Estimate materials, equipment, costs, and construction time
  • Prepare scaled drawings of the project
  • Prepare contract documents for building contractors
  • Visit worksites to ensure that construction adheres to architectural plans

Work Environment

Architects spend most of their time in offices, where they consult with clients, develop reports and drawings, and work with other architects and engineers. However, architects often visit construction sites to review the progress of projects. Many work more than 50 hours per week.
